Google launches OnHub, a simple, expensive Wi-Fi router

Image
Hate your finicky Wi-Fi router? Google does too, apparently. Google announced Tuesday that it's making a Wi-Fi router called OnHub, which is designed to alleviate the typical frustrations of buggy routers. It is partnering with TP-Link for the $199 router, available for immediate preorder. Google's preorder page already lists it as out of stock. In terms of design, the OnHub doesn't really look like any router before it. It eschews the usual antennas, wires and blinking lights for a large cylindrical shape with just one large light at the top. Google's cylindrical OnHub router. IMAGE: GOOGLE Google thinks there are benefits to this design: In its announcement post, it explains many people keep unsightly routers hidden away under desks and behind TVs where they don't work as well.  If the router is more pleasing to the eye, Google says, people will be more likely to keep it out in the open. A win-win. Within the cylinder are 13

Microsoft Launches New Windows 10 Build, Vows To Keep Its Early Access Program Alive

Image
Microsoft released a new Windows 10 build to its testing community today, noting in the process that the developers and fans in its ‘Insider’ program will continue to receive builds ahead of the general public. The gist is that after the formal launch of Windows 10 to the public — more on that here— Microsoft remains focused on placing new features and the like into its self-selected testing community. That choice fits with the company’s goal of updating Windows 10 on a chronic basis; if you are going to release consistently, you need testers. So, the Windows Insider program lives on. Included in that particular confirmation today was the release of Windows 10 build 10525. The new build, for Insiders on the ‘Fast Ring,’ includes new color options, the software nexus designed for testing parties to submit feedback, and improvements to ‘Memory Manager,’ a tool designed to allow for more programs to run at once without compromising machine performance. Has Autocorrect Gotten Worse Lately?

Image
We’ve all had it happen. You’re typing away on your iPhone when autocorrect shifts the entire tone of your chat. “Ducks” become “dicks” or “f**ks” become “ducks”. Blonde girls go blind, and suddenly even the simplest message about groceries or a cake order becomes a horror story. We joke, but in the age of texting (let alone sexting), any change to our algorithmical spelling safety net can be disastrous. That’s why it’s at least worth pointing out that — at least anecdotally — something seems to be going on with autocorrect on Apple’s devices these days. Apple’s notorious spelling tool has been more aggressive at “ducking” with my messages on both iOS and OS X lately. And I’m not the only one here at TC who’s run afoul of Apple’s autocorrect app. This is anecdotal, of course, but nearly all of us are noticing that the normally somewhat helpful companion has been a bit more confident about mis-interpreting our word choice lately. Anyone else having more

LG’s upcoming Nexus 5 (2015) gets snapped in a crystal clear picture

LG’s upcoming Nexus 5 (2015) gets snapped in a crystal clear picture   Leaked images have a tendency being as blurry and worst quality as they can, but this latest one which happens to be of Google’s LG Nexus 5 (2015) or whatever it is going to be called, is just the opposite. The extremely clear picture gives us a look at its rear surface and all the hardware that will form part of this side of the phone. The appearance of the device matches its 3D render that was leaked not too long ago. While that handset was showcased to have a black colored body, this new one here shows what the LG Nexus 5 (2015) will apparently look like in white. The Nexus logo will still be staying horizontal on this year’s Android flagship phone from Google. The circular ring that you can spot right below the camera is supposedly meant to enclose a fingerprint scanner, which is not that big a surprise since most high-end devices these days are shipping with this feature and also because Android
