5 Simple Steps to Safely Clean Your Laptop Screen

Cleaning a laptop and LCD monitor screen is different from cleaning a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor screen. A large part of this is because the traditional CRT screen is made up of glass, which is less prone to scratches from dust particles than the laptop screen.
Laptop screen is an LCD screen which is easily scratched and damaged and therefore requires special attention when cleaning. For this, you can follow these simple steps and guidelines while cleaning your laptop or LCD monitor screen to keep out of harm’s way and have a sparkling clean screen.
  1. Turn off the screen. This will allow you to see the areas that are dirty or oily easier.
  2. Wipe the LCD screen softly with the dry cloth to remove any dust. A great choice would be the microfiber type of cloth used to clean eyeglass lenses.
  3. Take the clean side of the cloth and dampen it with the distilled water.
  4. Gently wipe the surface of your laptop screen using a top to bottom motion. You can start at the upper left hand portion of the screen, wiping down towards the bottom and continuing along until the top right corner to the bottom right hand portion of the screen.
  5. Clean the edges of your laptop screen with any multipurpose cleaner but take care to avoid contact with the screen itself.

Tips & Warning

  • Avoid using paper towels, toilet paper, tissue paper, or something like your shirt to wipe the screen. These non-ultrasoft materials can scratch the display.
  • Avoid cleaning products that contain ammonia (like Windex®), ethyl alcohol (Everclear®) or other strong drinking alcohol. These chemicals could permanently discolor the screen or cause other kinds of damage.
  • Never spray liquid directly on to any screen. It could run inside the device and cause damage.
