How To Connect Laptop Display to TV thru HDMI

hdmiMost Laptops have an output port for an External Display that enables the user to view the desktop on an external monitor or TV; Nowadays it’s almost standard for Laptops to come with 1 or 2 HDMI ports. These HDMI ports can transport both the video and the audio to an external display, for ex. TV, Monitor, Projector, etc.
Connecting your laptop to an HDMI television is usually fairly simple. The following steps should help to accomplish this task.

How To Connect Laptop Display to TV thru HDMI

Required Items:

  • HDMI cable
  • TV with an available HDMI input port
  • TV remote
  • Laptop with HDMI output port

Instructions:

  1. Plug the HDMI cable into your laptop’s HDMI port. If your laptop doesn’t have an HDMI port, you still might be able to plug your laptop into your TV using a VGA Display cable typically used for Computer Monitors.
  2. Plug the opposing end of the HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on the TV or external monitor you’re using.
  3. Use the TV remote to select “HDMI” as the input source. If the TV has multiple HDMI inputs, you may need to select HDMI1, HDMI2, etc., depending on which port you plugged the laptop into.
  4. Turn on the laptop if it is not powered on already.
  5. Right-click on the desktop and select “Graphics Options” (if you don’t have the graphics options selection, proceed to the Step 6). Next, select “Output To” from the context menu that comes up, and choose “Digital Television” or similar.
  6. Right-click on the desktop and select “Display Settings” or “Screen Resolution”(Depends on Operating System and Graphics Drivers installed). Next, select the “Output” or “Display” device from the window that pops up, and choose “Digital Television” or similar.
  7. Your laptop’s screen will go dark, and the television screen will show the desktop. If the desktop doesn’t show on the TV screen, use the remote to cycle through the input sources until you find the one that’s displaying the computer’s desktop.
Tip – If your TV says Incorrect Screen Resolution or Invalid Display input, your Laptop Display Output Resolution must be changed to match the requirement of your TV.

How To Change Display Screen Resolution

  1. Right click on the desktop and select “Screen Resolution.” A dialog box will show up; one of the options will be “Resolution.”
  2. Select 1920 x 1080 or similar, whichever matches the resolution of your television.
  3. You can also configure the display to keep your laptop screen active (for mirroring what you’re doing on the laptop on a television in a conference room) or use the laptop and television as two monitors with a shared desktop.
  4. When the laptop is disconnected from the television, the screen resolution will automatically reset to the appropriate laptop display resolution.
Tip - On your laptop, use the “Windows-P” key combination to select various options for extending, duplicating or using “Projector Only” screen settings.
