How to Create a Windows 8 Recovery Drive

windows-8-startWe’re all familiar with the traditional Windows Startup Repair Disc, correct?  Well, Windows 8 still had the ability to create a startup repair disc, but Windows 8.1 did away with this ability. We now have what you would call a Windows 8 Recovery Drive. Basically it is a Windows Startup Repair USB Drive. This USB Drive gives you access to Advanced Startup Options, a menu full of advanced repair and troubleshooting tools for Windows 8 such as the Command Prompt, System Restore, Refresh Your PC, Reset Your PC, Automatic Repair, and more.
If for some reason Windows 8 happens to no longer start properly you will be able to boot from this USB drive and use these diagnostic tools to fix the problem.
If you have not created a USB Recovery Drive, and need one now, you can create a Recovery Drive from any working copy of Windows 8, doesn’t matter if it’s yours or a friends copy.
Note: A Recovery Drive is the Windows 8 equivalent of a System Repair Disc from Windows 7.  A Recovery Drive requires a USB flash drive that’s at least 16GB if you want to copy the system’s recovery partition, but if you don’t have a 16GB flash drive handy or just want to create a standard recovery drive to boot from you can get by with just a 512MB USB stick. This process will wipe the USB drive, so make sure you don’t have any personal files that you still need on the drive.
Follow the steps below to create a Windows 8 Recovery Drive:
  1. Open the Windows 8 Control Panel and tap or click on System and Security. Note: If you don’t see System and Security in your Control Panel just tap or click on Recovery and then move on to Step 4.
  2. In the System and Security window, tap or click on Action Center.
  3. In the Action Center window, tap or click on Recovery.
  4. In the Recovery window, tap or click on Create a recovery drive. Note: Tap or click Yes if you’re prompted with a User Account Control question about the Recovery Media Creator program.
  5. When you see the Recovery Drive window proceed to connect the flash drive that you plan on using as the Windows 8 Recovery Drive, assuming it’s not already connected.
  6. Check the Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive checkbox if it’s available and wish to use this option. Note: This option is usually available on computers that had Windows 8 preinstalled when purchased.
  7. Tap or click on the Next button and wait while Recovery Drive Creator searches for drives available to be used as a Recovery Drive.
  8. On the Select the USB flash drive screen, choose the drive letter for the flash drive you want to use as a Windows 8 Recovery Drive.
  9. Tap or click on the Next button and then tap or click on the Create button to begin the Recovery Drive creation process.
  10. Windows 8 will now create the Recovery Drive.
  11. When you see a The recovery drive is ready message tap or click on the Finish button.
  12. Label the flash drive Windows 8 Recovery Drive and store the flash drive somewhere safe and easily locatable
